Glossary of Terms (1) condom : Although the word "condom" usually refers to the male condom, there is also a female condom. Both male and female condoms are barrier methods of contraception. | (2) male condom : A male condom is made of very thin latex (rubber) or polyurethane and fits over the man's erect penis. Condoms are lubricated to make them easier to use. | (3) female condom : The female condom is a thin sheath or pouch worn by a woman during sex. It entirely lines the vagina and helps to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) including HIV. Two types of female condom are available. (4) lubricated condom : Lubricated condoms, such as Crowns, are simply male condoms with lubricant applied. The use of a lubricated condom rather than an unlubricated condom can help decrease friction during vaginal or anal sex, which can otherwise rupture the condom.
